Rio Hondo Prep International Students

There are a few things you should know before you consider applying to Rio Hondo Preparatory School as an International Student.

  1. There is very limited space for International Students for the coming school year.
  2. Students who need housing are placed in American homes.
  3. We are accepting applications for grades 6 through 10 only.
  4. All applications must be received no later than April 1.
  5. Applicants for the tenth grade must be fluent in English and will be main streamed if they are accepted. They will not be placed in ESL.
  6. Students in grades 6 trough 9 will be placed in ESL if necessary.
  7. We will require an interview with the student or a parent. Agents who are placing students need to be aware of this.
  8. Notifications as to acceptance will be mailed during the 2nd week of May.
  9. A non-refundable deposit is required to reserve a seat.
  10. I-20's will only be issued after acceptance into the school.

Location of School

Rio Hondo Prep is located on five acres in an urban setting 15 miles outside of Los Angeles California. The address is 5150 Farna Ave. P.O. Box 662080, Arcadia CA 91006-2080

Grades

Middle School: 6th through 8th
High School: 9th through 12th.

Class Size

15 to 25 students per class. The faculty/student ratio is 1:15

Accreditation

Fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges

Academics

A college preparatory school that prepares all of its graduates to meet most college admission requirements including the University of California system. Many students take Advanced Placement Examinations and on-line courses are offered for college credit.

English

International students are placed in regular classrooms with other college prep students as soon as possible. ESL (English as a second language) classes are offered as needed but students who are weak in English will need to sign up for an English tutorial program in order to pass their courses and graduate in four years. International students will need to meet the same graduation requirements as other students.

College Placement

Special counseling is offered to international students to help them meet the entrance requirements for the college of their choice and to assist them through the application process.

Graduation Requirements

English - 4 years History - 3 years and one summer tour Science - 3 years with labs Math 2-3 years including Advanced Algebra and Geometry Foreign Language - 2 years (native language may count).

Athletics

Interscholastic football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball and track. All students are expected to participate in the sports program.

Housing

Students who do not have a relative to live with are housed in American homes where they can truly interact with other students and gain from cultural experiences. Communication skills in the English language are gained more quickly in this environment as well.

Adjustment

Students are helped through the shock of entering a new culture by living in a real home instead of a dormitory, by attending small classes where it is easier to make friends and by participating in many social activities provided by the school.

Summer Tours

Eight week tours of the United States or Europe are offered during the summer and participation on one trip is required for graduation.

I-20's

I-20's are issued after a student has been accepted into Rio Hondo Prep.
