Rio Hondo Prep Merit System All students begin the year with 15 merits and are expected to maintain at least 10 merits at all times. Demerits are given for tardies, missed materials, misbehavior, not reporting to the office after an absence, etc. Merits and the reasons for demerits are sent home in the weekly envelope. Students are expected to maintain 10 merits and those who fall below this number are asked to work one hour for each demerit. Students may work off their demerits to get back up to 10 merits but not 11 or higher. Merit work needs to be verified on the proper form by:
It is important for students to earn merits back in the work program since 10 merits are needed in order to begin the next trimester with 15 merits. Those with less than 10 merits start the new trimester with whatever number they have. Ten merits are necessary in order to participate in various activities including field trips, inaugurals, ditch day, etc. Students who average 14 merits for all trimesters earn the privillege of attending ditch day in June, even though they did not have perfect attendance. Students who received 10 demerits during a trimester (even though they are earned back through the merit work program) are placed on merit probation and are suspended for a day unless their parents attend a special conference with the RHP Disciplinary Committee. Parents will be notified when this occurs. Students who are placed on probation twice during the school year are reviewed to see if they may continue in the school. MERITS MAY BE EARNED THROUGH THE WORK PROGRAM BUT STUDENTS WHO ALLOW THEIR MERITS TO GET TO ZERO WILL BE DISMISSED FROM THE SCHOOL.
