SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY

Rio Hondo Preparatory School is a coed independent college preparatory school located in Arcadia, California. We seek to provide a college prep program for students and to train Christian leaders. The student body consists of approximately 180 students in grades seven through twelve and was founded in 1964.

The school has a strong Christian tradition, emphasizing character development and service to others. Students have the opportunity to participate in athletics, serve in their community and enjoy an action-packed student life.

The curriculum at Rio Hondo Prep is designed to ensure that each student receives a foundation based on a mastery of core courses, enhanced by additional course work and hands-on learning experiences. The curricular program is designed around graduation requirements based on the California university a-g standards.

WE ARE THE “KARES”

We are the Rio Hondo Prep “Kares”. This is a unique nickname, not only because of its creative spelling but because a Kare is more than a mascot; it is a way of life. Rio Hondo students are expected to represent “Kare” not only on the field or court, but in everyday life. They Kare about their relationship with their Creator. They Kare for others, putting their own interests aside and learning to serve. They also demonstrate Kare in the classroom which encourages them to excel in academics, creating a Karing environment on campus and a place where the younger students are encouraged and supported. At RHP we don’t have a picture or a costumed mascot to represent us, we just have our students. They are the “Kares.”

STUDENT LIFE

The RHP experience is filled with rigorous academic challenges, intense athletic competition and a broad spectrum of student life activities that every family wants for their children. We encourage multi-sport athletes and expect each student to participate on either an athletic, academic or fine arts team during their afterschool hours. RHP also offers students the unique experience of becoming mentors to elementary school aged children in our after-school program, Kare Youth League. Building on the team concept, RHP has adopted a House system throughout the entire student body to help inspire school spirit, build character, grow the Kare community and build bonds of friendships that will last a lifetime.

EDUCATIONAL TOURS

RHP students travel together on unique summer tours and class trips, gaining first hand experience in history, government, science and fine arts. Over the years, our tours have explored every state in the nation, from the Hawaiian islands, to the inner passage of Alaska, to the majesty of Yellowstone, the Great Lakes, and more! Our students have seen the northern lights in Canada and served on outreach missions in Mexico. Our choirs have performed in the White House and our athletic teams have played teams from across the country. Many of our students have also travelled through Europe, experiencing diverse cultures and growing in their appreciation for our nation and the fabric of our society.

Rio Hondo Prep Students experience a wide array of activities both in and out of the classroom.
