English Language Arts 7 AB
Students in this course are exposed to the various genres of literature. Novels are read as a supplement to the anthology. Students are taught a variety of literary terms and learn to recognize them in the works. There is a special emphasis on the techniques for writing essays. (4-8 Units)
English Language Arts 8 AB
A literature-based English course emphasizing reading from diverse sources in order to increase appreciation and understanding of both contemporary and classical poets and authors. Class time is divided between activities and discussion that promote critical thinking, the study of grammar, and reading/vocabulary and writing in connection with the literature. The model used for teaching the expository essay is the Jane Schaffer Expository Essay model. (4-8 Units)
English 9/10 AB
An introductory course analyzing literature of many genres. Students read literature from various countries and literary periods and develop their skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing in connection with literature they read. This course teaches the stages of the writing process through a systematic approach so those students understand the underlying concepts. (5-10 Units)
World Literature AB
This course introduces students to major themes in world literature across the centuries with reading from many countries and diverse cultures. It encourages free voluntary reading and the development of critical thinking skills with an emphasis on the emergence of a student’s own voice through the critical essay. (5-10 Units)
US Literature AB
This course surveys American literature appropriate to the interests and needs of upper-division students. It is a chronological study examining major authors, periods, and forms and works in American literature. Lectures and group discussions prepare students for literature based composition assignments and the expository essay. (5-10 Units)
British Literature AB
A course analyzing literature of many genres. Students read literature from various periods throughout British history. They are given the opportunity to develop skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing in connection with the literature. The students will be instructed in the stages of the writing process through a systematic approach in order to understand the underlying concepts. (5-10 Units)
Honors British Literature
This is a course that analyzes literature of many genres. Students read literature from various literary periods throughout British history. It is half of a two-year honors English program where students take honors courses that focus on American literature one year and British literature the other year. However, the British Literature course differs from the American Literature course in that its primary focus is to prepare students for the English Literature and Composition Advanced Placement Test and so, in addition to the characteristic honors course material, students will also prepare specifically for the AP by learning AP style analysis for the essays and by practicing sample multiple-choice questions from past AP tests. AP Literature AB
AP English Literature and Composition is an introductory college-level literary analysis course. Students cultivate their understanding of literature through reading and analyzing texts as they explore concepts like character, setting, structure, perspective, figurative language, and literary analysis in the context of literary works.
ESL AB (Middle School)
An English course for non-native speakers designed to prepare students for success in regular college preparatory courses. Skills progress from speaking and listening skills to grammar, reading and writing. (5-10 Units)
Advanced ESL AB
An English course designed to instruct non-native English speakers in fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, rhetoric, writing, and listening skills in the English language. The purpose of this course is to prepare students for the mainstream high school English courses. (5-10 Units)
