During the quarantine our U.S. Lit Honors students worked on a variety of projects. They read and responded to the poetry of Robert Frost and read short works of Bradbury, London, and Hemingway and studied the play “The Glass Menagerie” by Tennessee Williams and watched an excellent rendering starring Katherine Hepburn. They also read the modern novel “The Testament” by John Grisham as a class and worked through the book through quizzes and a final essay.

Every student chose an American author from those they studied during the year and ran a 30 minute zoom meeting for the class, teaching the other students through lectures, videos, PowerPoints and Kahoot competitions. Students took notes and were given a comprehensive test at the end of the activity. Students also did a more intensive study of their author, analyzing how life experiences affected the author’s settings, characters and themes and presented a 12 to 14 page research paper. Finally, students also participated in creative activities on authors and their works.

*Pictured are some of the responses from the students.

RHP HS Latin students met their quarantine challenge by sight reading a 53-page novel in Latin! Over a two-week period they read outloud in Zoom break-out rooms. Students were amazed that after formal study all year, they were able to read a brand new book with their friends.

To top it off, all HS Latin students earned recognition in the 2020 National Latin Exam, including Gold Medal winners McKenna, Elle, Raegan, Royal - and Silver Medalist Shalini.

I took Latin with Mr. Taylor in the early 1970’s. I chose his Latin class over his Spanish class for the exact reason that I wouldn’t have to speak it! I had a terrible time with pronunciation of foreign languages. The Latin I learned served me well in my nursing classes later in my life. Congrats to those who can actually speak Latin.

Love this!!

I loved Latin! Leslie Weber Orsburn

Excellent! Duces Feminae

Dear Rio Hondo Prep Alumni,

We hope you are well!

We are putting together an appreciation page on our website for the Rio Hondo Prep Class of 2020. These 28 students have reached a significant life milestone and due to present circumstances have not been able to celebrate in the usual fashion.

If you would be so kind as to write them a short message of congratulations and email it to Kristy Horton at khorton@rhprep.org by Saturday (5/23) we will post it.

Thank you!
